How to reach Elephanta caves from Mumbai

Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples which is dedicated to the Hindu lord Shiva. These caves are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri known as “the city of caves” nearby the city of Mumbai in east zone of the Indian state of Mahārāshtra. This island, located about 2 kilometers west of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Elephanta Caves is famous for its rock-cut art and architecture old ancient design from the times of medieval India. These are divided in two groups of the Elephanta Caves, the first is a large group of 5 Hindu caves and the second one is a smaller group of 2 Buddhist caves. From this place you can see an amazing view of the Mumbai skyline.

How to Reach Elephanta caves:

First you have to reach to Mumbai by air, by bus or by train. Once you reach to Mumbai then from any point in Mumbai, catch a local train for Church gate or CST (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal) station. Than from there you can either walk to the Gateway of India or hire a taxi/cab. Alternatively, you can reach to the Gateway of India directly through the local bus. On reaching the Gateway of India, you can hire a ferry to the Elephanta Caves which take 1.5 hour & ticket charges is of approx. 200 Rs for both the sides.

Best Time to Visit Elephanta caves:
Visiting hours timing is:-10:00 am (Morning) & closing at 5:00pm (Evening).
Closed on: Monday.
Morning hours are much better to visit this destination.
Best time to visit: Winter season from November to February are the best time to visit these caves. Avoid peak monsoon season (June to August) as the sea becomes unpredictable and ferry schedules get disrupted due to the heavy rain.

Ellora is a spiritual location in Maharastra, central India. How to Reach Elephanta Caves by Train, Air, Road and Car

Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World ancestry place of activity and a selection of cave temples widely dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Mahārāshtra.An hour-long ferry ride from the Gateway of India to the Elephanta Island in the Mumbai Harbour, will accessible you up to a hidden world of rock-cut caves prosperous in their carvings and boasting a legion of Shaivite sculptures. Welcome to Elephanta Caves, wraped away in a desolate island locally called Gharapuri (city of caves) 10 kilometres east of the Gateway of India. Through the 19th and 20th Centuries, historians and professors have been in two minds about their exact period of origin. Further studies, mismated evidence, architectural style and inscriptions have traced the cave temples to King Krishnaraja from the Kalachuri empire around mid-6th Century, and the Buddhist Stupas to the Hinayana Buddhists who had settled in the island around 2nd Century BCE, much before the arrival of the Brahmans to Elephanta.The regional Marathi folks popularised this island as Gharapuri, but Elephanta became known vernacular after the Portuguese took over the land from the Gujarat Sultanate in 1534 and named it so after the extensive rock-cut elephant statue that stood guard over the sea. The colonisers classify the structure as a landmark to dock their boats and to also tell it apart from the other smaller islands on the Arabian Sea. You can no longer find this imposing elephant statue here as it was damaged in an attempt to move it to England. In 1914, it was assempled by Cadell and Hewett and placed in the Jijamata Udyaan, a zoo and garden in Byculla, Mumbai, where it belief today.

How to Reach Elephanta by Ferry/Boat Services

To reach Elephanta Caves, one will have to go to the Gateway of India in Mumbai and take a boat ride from there. The journey catch one hour by sea. Tickets for a deluxe boat are Rs. 140 for adults and Rs. 90 for children. Economy boats charge Rs. 20 less on both tickets. The first boat stalks at 9:00 AM and the last boat from the island leaves at 5:00 PM.

Elephanta Caves By Train (Nearest station Mumbai)

Elephanta Caves does not have a train station, and the nearest station is Mumbai, at a distance of 10 kms from Elephanta Caves.Mumbai is major railway junction and trains from all over from India connected with Mumbai. If you are coming from any express trains to Mumbai you may debaord at CST, Bandra . You can take local trains from there. Infact from anywhere in Mumbai, you may catch a local train to CST (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus which is just 25-30 minutes walking distance from the CST. From the Gateway of India, many boat facilities were available from there.
