Tired of waiting for information on trains? Or travelling by train and tired of waiting for it to reach the next station? And want to Train Location Status online?
Nowadays, you have varied choices for getting information on the current location of a train. Gone are the days of depending on phone lines and boards at stations to ascertain train location. Online tracking systems and SMS-based train tracking have made things much simpler.
Indian Railways Network and Challenges
Indian Railways carries around 20 million passengers daily across 7000+ stations. It is a massive task to keep the network running with precision. Hence, delays, cancellations, and diversions are sometimes inevitable.
As such, anyone waiting to board a train, traveling inside a train, or waiting to receive family or friends will find real-time train status information extremely useful.
Introduction of RTIS (Real Time Train Information System)
Indian Railways introduced a major solution to this issue through the Real Time Train Information System (RTIS). This system was developed to replace manual tracking and provide accurate train location details.
RTIS is a satellite-based system that provides train running information to the public through mobile phones, the internet, call centers, and display boards at stations. It also aims to provide onboard information through coach display systems.
Limitations of the Old Manual System
Earlier, the tracking system depended on manual updates where station masters informed control rooms when a train passed a station. This system was slow and often inaccurate.
RTIS replaced this with automated tracking using GPS-enabled devices installed in locomotives, improving accuracy and efficiency significantly.
Technology Behind Train Tracking
The system was developed through collaboration between CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) and ISRO, using GPS and satellite communication technology.
It provides real-time data such as:
Train speed
Current location
Direction and route
Expected arrival and departure timings
Today, this system has been expanded to cover thousands of trains, including both passenger and freight services.
Benefits of Real-Time Train Tracking
RTIS and modern tracking systems have improved railway operations in many ways:
Better train scheduling and management
Improved safety and monitoring
Real-time updates for passengers
Efficient handling of delays and diversions
It also helps in emergencies by integrating data like station details, routes, and nearby facilities.
Modern Train Tracking Platforms
Indian Railways now offers multiple platforms for checking train status:
NTES (National Train Enquiry System) for live updates
RailRadar for map-based tracking
IRCTC website and app for train status along with booking
These platforms provide details such as train location, delays, routes, and stoppages.
GPS Integration and Real-Time Accuracy
With GPS integration and digital mapping, train tracking has become more accurate than ever. Passengers can now track trains on maps with minimal delay and improved precision.
This advancement has helped Indian Railways enhance operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
Food Delivery in Train with TravelKhana
For passengers traveling long distances, food is an important part of the journey. TravelKhana offers food delivery in train, allowing you to order fresh and hygienic meals from top restaurants.
Modern technology has made train tracking in India extremely simple and efficient. With systems like RTIS, NTES, and RailRadar, passengers can now get real-time train updates instantly.

Now, Indian Railways cannot be fully to blame. It is one of the biggest and most complex rail networks in the world. 23 million passengers need to be ferried across over 7000 stations daily with clockwork precision in all corners of the country. This means there are inevitable delays, cancellations and rescheduling of trains.
Therefore, information on Indian railway live running status is vital for the general public as it saves them time and energy. The traditional method of train enquiry live status has been through the phone lines with numbers like 139, 131, etc. People using this facility were frustrated as these numbers would be busy at all times and difficult to get through. But the best mode nowadays is through online sources and SMS.
Some of the online sources of train details are as follows:
National Train Enquiry System
This is the official website of the Indian railways. Train running status live information is provided by this site. Facility of “Train schedule,” which needs you to feed in the train number and get the feedback on, scheduled arrival, station, day, scheduled departure, as well as distance between stops. ‘Trains rescheduled’ is a service where you provide start date and train number. You will get a list of rescheduled trains and train number, train name, source, destination, train type, etc. You can get a list of trains diverted and trains cancelled.
Nowadays, the service of travelenquiry.com is available on your Smartphone. The website is compatible with all smart phones and one can track train running status live.

Introduction to Indian Railways and Train Delay Status
Want to know about Indian Railways and Train Delay Status? The network of Indian Railways is always been counted among one of the largest rail networks worldwide. Operated and supervised by the Government of India, Railway Ministry, more than 23 million passengers travel via trains on daily basis. The department started its operations way back in 1853 and since then, undoubtedly it has come long way since then. The common concern that remained is actually the delay process and trains due to different reasons altogether get delayed so and then.
The reasons behind the delay of trains could be bad climatic conditions, fault in the system of train, mechanical failure, landslides, floods, fog, story weather, tracks overheating, yearly maintenance, trees fallen on tracks and more. Well, with technology things and processes have improvised and enhanced.
Certainly, when trains get delayed, you lose valuable time—time that you could spend on more important tasks.
To check the train delay status, you can use several methods such as phone enquiry, SMS-based enquiry, or online platforms. One of the most popular sources is NTES (National Train Enquiry System), which provides real-time updates on train delays and running status. You can also dial the toll-free number 139 to get detailed information quickly and easily. So, check the details in advance. If your train is running late, use that waiting time productively and make the most of your journey.
Overview of Indian Railways and Common Delay Causes
Indian Railways is one of the biggest rail networks in the world. It is a public enterprise operated by the Ministry of railways, Government of India and carries over 23 million passengers’ daily, covering 7172 stations.
The first railway line was set up in 1853 between Bombay and Thane and was nationalised in 1951. It operates suburban as well as long distance trains on three gauge systems: narrow, broad and metre gauge. It serves 29 states and 7 Union Territories and also provides restricted international services to Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.
One of the common problems of the Indian Railways is the delay process. Many trains run late due to a variety of reasons. One of the main causes is inclement weather like fog, rain, floods, landslides, overheating of tracks, wind and stormy weather, etc. For instance, heavy rain can ruin ballasts or the rocks that hold the tracks. Other reasons for train delay are mechanical failure, fallen trees on tracks, yearly maintenance, etc.
Maintenance Challenges and Real-Time Tracking Solutions
Tracks covered by broken trees necessitate the coming of railroad crews in high rail vehicles (which run on both rail and road) in order to clear tracks. Yearly maintenance, replacements and track upgrades help to keep railroads in fit condition. However, these factors cause trains to run late.
When trains are delayed, it wastes your precious time as you wait for the train at the station. The Indian Railways has made efforts to set up systems whereby you can track the current position of a train and its distance from previous and next stations.
There are three ways to track delay in train status through government services:
Phone enquiry: Manual enquiry numbers 131/132, 136 (IVRS) about late running trains and 137 (IVRS) PNR status have all been merged into one phone line 139. The number 139 provides the following 24×7 services: PNR enquiry, all India position of current train running status, fare enquiry, availability of berths, etc. Indian railway delay status can be tracked efficiently and information about running status of special trains will also be provided. 139 is a completely free service from the Indian Railways and works across the whole of India (towns and villages). All you need is to call 139 from MTNL and BSNL landlines or mobile services such as Idea, Garuda, Spice, Vodaphone, etc.
Mobile and Online Options for Train Enquiry
SMS based enquiry about trains: Many mobile phone service providers offer SMS service on train delay information. All you need to do is send an SMS to 57886 through your phone. Check PNR status, train alert, train status, train schedule, train information, train timetable, etc. Example, write IRTrain [train name] send SMS to 57886 for complete information on train schedule and status. Also, you can send an SMS to139 through the following request < AD Train number STD-code>. An example: if you are in New Delhi (011 STD code), and you want to know where exactly the train of your interest (number 10151) is located and when it will arrive at the station, just send SMS- <AD 10151 011>.
Online enquiry about trains: With the boom on internet, more travellers have started using the India railways website – train enquiry to find train status and www.indianrail.gov.in to check reservations. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) of Indian Railways created a new site, train enquiry, to offer real-time train updates. Users praise the site for its efficiency, advanced technology, and simple, user-friendly interface.
Websites, Apps, and Private Alternatives
Users don’t need to know the train number or code. Instead, they simply enter the station name, and the system displays all trains—scheduled, currently in transit, or already departed from the station. By clicking on “trains in transit,” users can instantly see the train’s exact location and find out whether it is on time or running late. The platform also shows the distance from the last station and how far it is from the next stop.
The NTES website provides live train status using Google Maps. Its real-time rail radar tracks every train across the country. Trains running late appear in red, while on-time trains show up in blue for quick visual recognition.
You can also check Indian Railway train delay status on the same platform, including specialized features such as live updates on fog-related delays. This efficient tool makes tracking train schedules and delays fast, easy, and accurate.
The service provided to track trains is called as Spot your train. To track your train, enter train name or number, journey station and journey date, and you will get the following feedback: queried station, current position, expected departure, last updated station.
For trains rescheduled, enter train number and start date and you will get a list of trains rescheduled, train name, train number, train type, destination and source. The time of delay (rescheduled time) is also provided. The website also provides information on trains cancelled and trains diverted.
IRCTC and Third-Party Services
You don’t need to be online to make use of this website. It is compatible with most of the smart phones, and thus, you can track your train on your Smartphone.
IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Transport Corporation): Even this site provides a service of tracking trains and delays in trains. Log on to irctc.co.in. Feed in destination (from and to) and it shows all trains on that route. Select a particular train and get details on current position and delay in trains. It indicates the station crossed previously and the next station to cross as well as timings for the same.

Indian railways structure is becoming old day by day. The creaking structure has too many loopholes which have to be cured and taken care off immediately. Regular accidents are happening and passengers are getting worried to travel by the train. Besides the facility to track train in India, one has to know the loopholes that are becoming evident in the infrastructure day by day. Railway is a pride for all the Indians. We should protect it and make it beautiful so that people can boast about it.
In order to make things normal, the railway ministers are working on a project, which is known as Rashtriya Rail Sangraksha Kosh. It has arranged a sum total of around Rs1, 10,239 crore to build up the falling giant structure of Indian railways.
But what is the procedure of maintenance and what should be given priority? There is a six member committee put up by the railway ministry to plan a scheme, which will raise funds and they will make a list of what should be repaired and constructed to make the railways more convenient. They will get a lot of funding from the Finance Ministry, which will help the committee to plan and build more level crossings, advanced signaling systems and modern telecom structures, which will make the communication system easier leading to less accidents and misinterpretations.
Many mechanical, civil and electrical engineers are needed to develop the infrastructure in a modern way. To make things up to date, a number of engineers have to be appointed and more funds are needed to aid their salary. For that, the committee needs to make a valid proposal and send it to the Financial Ministry so that they can help them further. If the Finance Ministry is convinced enough, there will be desired amount of funds to make things fall into places.
The present situation of Indian railway is not in a very good condition. In the present year, there have been eight accidents only because of derailments. Trains get derailed because of the poor condition of rail tracks. These are needed to be repaired immediately.
The main purpose of Rashtriya Rail Sangraksha Kosh is to arrange money and develop the railway infrastructure. It has to have a corpus of at least 1, 10,239 crore rupees, which are needed for the up gradation. This is for strengthening the rail and safety infrastructure. This is because regular train accidents are claiming innocent lives. People are not confident anymore to avail a train for travelling from one place to another. To bring back this confidence, the railway ministry should improve all the railway tracks and signaling system so that regular accidents due to mis-signaling can be avoided.
We all know that Indian Railway is such a big network and it is very difficult to maintain every nooks and corner of it. But the ministry has to be cautious. The regular mishaps that are occurring due to bad infrastructure should be avoided and to be taken very seriously.
