Water Train to Parched Latur a Heaven Sent

The Indian Railways has sent a ‘water train’, a train carrying 5,50,000  litres of drinking water as per a humanitarian gesture to the parched district of Latur, in Maharashtra state.

On Monday, April 11, the Indian Railways sent forth a train having 10 wagons to carry the precious, life giving water from Miraj (Western Maharashtra) to Latur district in the region of Marathwada.

The train reached Latur at 4 a.m., after traversing a 375 km journey. It was welcomed with great cheer and fanfare. There was a sense of relief among top civil and police officials, the mayor of Latur and general public. At the same time, security was beefed up around the train to avoid any untoward incident.

Officials began off-loading of water in a dried up well owned by a local framer situated near the railways station. This water will be carried later to a filtration plant, using pipes.

After the process of filtration, which will make the water potable, water will be dispatched to remote villages in the district. Water will be transported in tankers to people who are awaiting the water with great expectation. There are kilometres of queues of colourful plastic and steel pots, pitchers and bucket made of hundreds of people who are waiting for water.

This water initiative was launched by Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Railways to help people in his home state reeling under water crisis. The crisis was especially severe in Latur district villages, which have a population of 2.45 crores.

As per instructions of Suresh Prabhu, 50 tank wagons like ones used to transport milk and oil were dispatched to Kota workshop in Rajasthan, where they were cleaned thoroughly and made ready for undertaking the journey to Sangli where they were filled with water.

Indian Railways is also planning more of such trips for water needs to fulfil the thirst of villages of Latur district. But the schedule of such trains has not yet been finalized. At present, 15,000 villages of the state mostly in Osmanabad, Beed and Latur district are reeling from severe water scarcity.

Latur has been rocked by stray incidents of violence related to water shortage. As such, the police has set up prohibitory orders till May 3. Also public reservoirs and storage tanks for water are being protected by armed guards of the police face.

Some villagers of the district had to trek over 12 kms for getting a pot of water. As such domestic water pots are kept secure under lock and key. There is a cessation of teaching at schools, which have been closed. Social events like marriage have also been stalled. Agriculture activities have come to a close.

The 10 wagons of the water train were dispatched to Latur from Miraj railways station (from Maharashtra’s’ Sangli district) where they were filled  with water. Each wagon had a capacity of 50,000 litres.

The district administration had got hold of a large well near the Latur station for storing the water, prior to curing at the filtration plant. The success of train running status of the water train is inspiring further action. A second water train made of 50 wagons is set to be ready to store and transport water to Latur, according to officials.

Don’t Search For The Driver In This Train!

Railways have always been an integral part our country. Any sort of development in this department can directly or indirectly influence the growth in all other spheres. Of late, significant efforts are being made to improvise the existing railways system in our country. Delhi has taken a step ahead in this context and introduced automated trains, which don’t require a driver to operate it. It is all set to run these trains from 2017. The parts are being manufactured in Korea and are assembled here in India. Let’s have a closer look into this train.

spot the train on mobile

How does this train run…?

The control room takes care of all the control aspects of this train. A two way communication system is established between the control room and the train. Every coach is equipped with a CCTV system, which enables the control room to live stream. Despite taking all necessary steps to keep the tracks clean, small obstacles can make their way onto the tracks. A device, which is capable of removing these minor obstructions, is attached to these trains. Front facing cameras are also attached to avert any possible damages.

What makes them special….?

Check out the special features of this train here under:

  • This train doesn’t require an additional cabin for the driving crew. This creates an additional space to accommodate 60 more passengers.
  • The automated mechanism enables the train to move at an enhanced speed.
  • Energy consumption of the train retards by about 20% cutting down the costs incurred due to power supply.
  • The coaches are designed to be as wide as 3.2m.
  • Much to the relief of the internet addicts, the passengers of this train are enabled with free Wi-Fi. Moreover, this train also has enough number of mobile charging points and USB ports.
  • The entire route map is digitalized and passengers can spot the train on mobile. The LCD screens support real time video streaming, videos, graphics and animations.
  • The ventilation system is so designed that it promotes improved air circulation.
  • An additional space is created to accommodate 12 extra passengers in each coach by placing the equipment beneath the seats.
  • The interior of the train looks appealing to the eyes as the floor design is carefully chosen to be attractive.
  • Unlike orthodox trains, they are truly quiet in operation. The wheels are powered with noise dampers, which make it possible for them.

Color coding:

The color coding introduced for these trains have to be given credit for an increase in its passenger capacity. The key features of this coding are detailed below:

  • Each of the six coaches is equipped with these colored seats.
  • The first and last coaches are completely reserved for women. These seats are indicated by pink color.
  • Dark colors are used to represent reserved seats. If the color of a seat is blue, the reserved ones will be in dark blue.

These trains introduced by the Delhi Metro seems to be promising and the successful implementation of these trains will soon place Delhi among those few cities, which has driverless train system.

The latest initiatives made by the Indian Railways

The Indian Railways is constantly improving and developing. It has come up with quite a few new innovations in the recent past and has proposed many more. They want to ensure their passengers not just a comfortable but also a reliable travel experience.

Here are the latest initiatives by the Indian Railways for a ‘happy journey’

As per the reports, this scheme has been launched on pilot basis and the service will be available in more than 200 cities initially. Customers can book a ticket 5 days prior to commencement of journey and can get it delivered at home where the payment can be made.

  1. The cash on delivery payment method for booking tickets

For customers, who do not have access to the net banking facilities and for those who do not prefer using their credit or debit cards for online transactions, the Indian Railways introduced the COD–Cash on Delivery payment system. You can book online but pay in cash. If the reports are to be trusted, the COD scheme has been launched on the basis of the pilots and initially, the service will be available in not more than 200 cities. The passenger can book the ticket online before six days of the journey’s commencement and can have the ticket delivered on their address for the payment.

  1. Eco-friendly vacuum toilets on the train

The Railway Minister, in the Rail budget 2015-2016 announced that the Indian Railways would install 100 vacuum toilets in Shatabdi Express on the Delhi-Chandigarh route. However, this is for trial basis and if the initiative turns out well, each train in India will have vacuum toilets.

Vacuum or the eco-friendly toilets are very important since they prevent any kind of corrosion on railway tracks when the train is stopped for discharging all the waste on the tracks.

There are also plans of swapping the toilets with bio-friendly ones.driverless_metro

  1. Free wifi at stations and in trains

There are quite a few luxury trains, which have already been providing wifi connectivity since quite some time, but Prime Minister Modi wants that at least ten more long express trains get wifi. It is likely that priority will be extended to Rajdhani, Duronto and the Shatabdi express.

Also, the railways are looking forward to offer free Wi-Fi facilities to a total of 400 railway stations in the country, but it can be used for only 30 minutes.

Bangalore railway station became the foremost station in India to get Wi-Fi facility for offering high-speed connectivity to the passengers. This service began in October 2014. Later, the service started at Ahmadabad railway station on 31st January, 2015.

  1. Bullet trains – Indian Railways came up with a proposal of high-speed bullet trains in the country on the 2015 Republic Day Parade. Bullets trains will run only on three routes by the end of this year.

With such a lot of emancipation in the railway sector, from the facility to spot ur train to the availability of nutritious food to vacuum toilets, our country sure is moving ahead on the tracks of development.

Easy ways to make train reservations!

If you are confused on how to make train reservations then keep reading. We know that it might not be easy for some of you to decide on the trains, check the timings, and check the seats and so on. You can always book your tickets on the IRCTC website. But make sure you make the reservations in advance since most of the trains are usually booked for months.

If you have had troubles booking your train tickets, then here is a guide for help: –

  • You can check train seat availability on TravelKhana’s official website to know if the train you want to travel has any seats left. Once you find the name and number of the train you are going to travel from, select your berth. Other than checking the seats, you can use their train tracking system to check the status of the train at all times.
  • Make sure you enter the right details of the station you will start from to the station you will get off at.
  • If the trains do not have the class you want then be open to the others. Do not be picky because sometimes it can be tough to find seats on trains in your desired class.
  • Always book in advance. You always have the option of cancellation. So do not worry. Booking 3 to 4 months in advance is always better than booking at the last minute.
  • Make sure you note the number and name of the train you will be travelling from.
