Are you aware of what Science Express means? Have you heard of Science Express Biodiversity special and Science Express Climate Action Special? Science Express is been reckoned as an innovative and ingenious mobile science exhibit held by the Government of India Department of Science and Technology – DST on a 16 coach AC train. Isn’t it fascinating and creative enough to read and imagine? The main aim of it is to meet the arising interests and queries of youth and dynamic people these days in the science and technology field and reckoning the same, it was been held at Safdarjung railway station in year 2007. Since its introduction in that year, this unique and innovative mobile science exhibition has actually completed about 8 phases involving 4 of ‘Science Express’ and 3 of ‘Biodiversity Special’ and 1 of ‘Climate Action Special’.

The major visitors were students and teachers and by far it has actually made a tour of about 1, 41,800 km and made halts at 455 railway stations in an entire journey of 1602 exhibition days. The amazing record and stats has actually made it count among one of the widely visited and longest running mobile science and technology exhibition that has made entry about 6 times in the famous Limca book of records. In the period from 2007 to 2011, this train made people aware about the micro as well as macro cosmos depicting the positives and strengths of science in fulfilling global challenges involving innovations and recent discoveries in the modern science field. In fact, the coaches were depicted thematically on the basis of building blocks of life, bing bang, architecture of mind, nano cosmos, world of senses, from gene to organism, data to knowledge, sensors, spaceship earth, the universe, our home in the cosmos and global challenges. It was a pure bliss and full of knowledge especially for students who always feel keen to know more about the cutting edge science as well as technology via models, prototypes, exhibits and even audio video displays that have been placed in the coaches.

In 2015, it has been redesigned for the eighth phase as Science Express Climate Action Special and ran on the Indian rail tracks aiming to spread knowledge among people about climate change, possible responses and observed anticipated impacts due to the same. This advanced and very much knowledgeable mobile exhibition focused on spreading word among different sections of the society especially students about and how climate change could be tackled through adaptation and mitigation. Such a thoughtful initiative it was taken by DST, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Environment, Department of Biotechnology and Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, isn’t it? In this phase, it travelled all around the nation making stoppages at about 64 locations based in 20 states covering an overall journey of 19,800 km. Adding to this, it got an amazing response from students, teachers and visitors from all across the globe with a rough estimate of about 23,24,240 visitors. The food delivery: can there be any better option?

The railways have a number of commuters moving from one destination to another for different reasons. There are lots of trains keep on running on tracks to help the passenger reach their location. All the things with railways are really good and effective, but when it comes to the long route journey and food availability in train during such journey, there is a big question mark on the performance of railway. There are many trials and errors done in the past by the department, but got no result and hence finally it shook hands with the private players who are in the field of food parcel delivery.

The passengers who travel by long distance train need food during the journey. The train usually stops at a few stations only and majority of the time it stops for a few minutes only. In such situation for a passenger, it is highly difficult to fetch some food from the stalls on the platform also. Hence, the busy stations such as Allahabad junction also one cannot get the food that can satiate his tummy. Then in such case, what is the option left for one who wants to have the food delivery in train Allahabad Jn? For some years there was no answer to such questions, but now with the change of technology the food parcel delivery is the right answer for the same. It is a much different service than ordinary food parcel delivery.

How does it help?

Well, the system established by the service provider is much effective and hence it is easier for one to place an order. One can use his phone to place an order by calling the customer care or go to the site of the service provider and check the details as well as place the food parcel order. In any of the options he can first know the menu and rates as well as other categories of food so that can have a wide choice. In such situation, he just needs to provide certain details such as name, number, and PNR number so that the service provider can verify the same. Once the order is placed, he can also prefer an option for payment such as pay through a card, net banking or by cash on delivery.

Once the order is placed the concerned centre of the food parcel service provider is informed and as the train arrives at the platform of the concerned station, he gets the food parcel delivery from the delivery boy at his seat. He can make the payment to him if the option of cash on delivery is chosen.

This service is much popular as there are lots of benefits associated with the same. The passenger can have fresh and tasty food that can help him enjoy the journey. The quantity as well as rates are reasonable and hence one may feel like eating at a hotel. The food is also tasty and prepared by the expert cook in the kitchen that makes a huge difference than eating an ordinary meal.

Find and boarding your train in an easy manner

A railway station has a carnival atmosphere with vendors, passengers, hustle and bustle with plenty of activities all over the place. If you are absent minded and wait at the wrong platform, it may spell disaster, especially so when the train may stand at a designated platform for a couple of minutes and you have a lot of luggage to carry. So how do you find and board your train!

Once you reach the station

After reaching the station, the first thing that you need to do is to find out on which platform your train will arrive. Particular place where your coach will stand also needs to be found out. One cannot ignore this as most trains have standard 18 coaches and during peak seasons it increases to 24 as well. Imagine such a situation where you are stuck at the wrong end of the platform when the train arrives. Most of the stations have electronic boards that clearly mention the coach positions along with the arrival and departure of the trains. If you are still in doubt, you can ask a railway employee.

Each compartment is numbered by their coach position like S1, A1. If you are still confused, then it would not be a bad idea to ask any vendor? Their knowledge can be trusted and they seldom mislead you.

On arrival of the train

Recently on train food in Surat station, I came across a publication illustrating on what best needs to be done when the train arrives at the railway station. Firstly, the platforms at most of the railway stations in the country are crowded. There is utter confusion when the train enters the platform as each one wants to enter in first. Not only you have to dodge people, there are suitcases and sometimes even steel trunks to be dealt with. If you are brave, then be content to deal with all these; otherwise, wait for the other passengers to board.

Once you enter the compartment, you will find that all the seats are numbered. Surprise might be in store for you as someone might have already occupied your seat. Usually, they move apart when all the organizing aspect is taken care off.

Hire a porter

This might sound simple as you can avail the services of a porter who will find your compartment, and place your luggage for a fee. Plenty of them can be found at railway station, and they can be identified by their red jackets. Licensed porters have fixed charges, but in the case of private ones, it is better to bargain before you strike a deal with them. Generally, the rates are Rs. 40 for one bag that is carried on their head. But rarely you will find a porter agreeing to this and generally they ask more.

If you follow the above-mentioned steps, you can find and locate your coach, as well as seat numbers in an easy manner. If you are confused, seeking professional help would not be a bad idea at all.

The Rules of Refund Process for Train Ticket

Indian Railways is a very big network and thus it has some genuine terms and conditions to work smoothly. From train routines to booking procedures, everything works under a certain method and in case of ticket money refunds and other things, certain instructions are always followed.

There is a provision of refund rules in Indian Railways and the comprehensive refund rules are notified post the year 1998. New refund rules have come to function from the year 2015.

There have been a few objectives for the new changes which have been done under the rule. They are mainly done to

  • To plug the scope of misuse.
  • To help and facilitate the travellers with proposed ticketing or with mobile ticketing.
  • To prevent and discourage the blacker to market train tickets to the passengers.
  • To initiate the process of automatic refund of e tickets in case there is a cancellation of the train departure due to some unavoidable crisis. One does not need to fill up any TDR in this case.

What are the rules?

There are some revised refund rules which are needed to be followed.

  • There is a charge of clerkage per passenger in case of cancellation of any unreserved, waitlisted and RAC tickets. For unreserved classes, it is Rs. 30 and second class (reserved) it is Rs. 60 and for other classes also, it is Rs. 60.
  • The cancellation charge which is valid on per passenger for confirmed tickets vary because; it all depends on the gap between the day of the cancellation and the date of journey. In case of cancellation before 48 hours of the journey, the minimum cancellation charges are:

1st class AC: Rs 120

2nd  tier AC: Rs 100

3rd  tier AC: Rs 90

Second Class Sleeper: Rs 60

Second Class: Rs 30

In case, it is between 48 hours and 6 hours of the journey, the cancellation charges are added 25 percent extra depending on which class the passenger was supposed to travel. If it is done between 6 hours to 2 hours before the train departure, then the cancellation charge soars up to the 50 percent rate of the actual ticket fare.

  • There is no refund procedure after this and within 2 hours to train departure one can cancel the ticket but they will never get a refund.
  • In case of cancelling of trains for e-tickets: Before 01.07.2015, for refund, TDR had to be filed. In the event of cancellation of trains for e tickets, with effect from 01.07.2015, refund is granted automatic. There is no need of filing of TDR. But there are not any changes for the counter PRS ticket.

Indian Railways is undoubtedly the largest network for long distance travels in India, and one can easily afford this travel as the ticket rates are priced. One can also book and cancel tickets from online websites as well and it is easy to do that by logging into the website and choosing according to the convenience.

How to get a train ticket reserved?

Indian Railways have rules for reserving seats and berths and compartments which come with some regular terms and conditions. If a passenger wants to reserve a seat or a berth in any train which is under Indian Railways segment, then they need to buy a ticket from either the Railway Reservation Office or through an authorized Travel Agency. At present, one can also log in to the official website of Indian Railways called IRCTC and book a ticket online by purchasing them through debit cards or other mobile wallets.

How and when to reserve a ticket?

Reservation rules say that, one can book a train ticket earliest of 120 days before the date of journey of the train in all the classes. But the period of ARP or Advance Reservation is done only one the day of the departure of the train. In case of intermediate reservations, like when the train arrives to intermediate stations of the following day of the departure one can book them even before 120 days in advance of the date of journey of the train from those intermediate stations.

There is a requisition form which is given to be filled up before reserving tickets. A single person can book up to six tickets for six passengers for the same destination in the same train. Once the booking is done, they will get the confirmation ticket with the ten digit PNR number, written on the top left of the ticket. Any one of the six passengers need to present any one of the identity proofs like voter id card, pan card, ration car, adhar card, passport id, driving license, student identity card during the time of journey. If they fail to produce any one of the given identity proofs, it will be considered that the group of the passengers are traveling without tickets and they will be charged fine according to the law.

One person can submit only a single requisition form at a time. If return journey tickets should be confirmed as well, then a person can submit two requisition forms at a time. There is no reservation done on a provisional basis and no accommodation will be provided without purchase of a ticket. The passengers are requested to give the PNR number which is imprinted on the top left corner of the ticket in case if some officials ask it and require them regarding any problems in reservations.

Online ticket purchase

One can log into authorized online websites to get their reservation done in their preferable train depending on their date of journey and the destination. They can check through online websites about the details of any train and seat availability of the train as well. After checking them, they can book their tickets by paying through online payment procedures like debit cards or net banking. Once they receive the e ticket, they need to take a print out of it to produce on the date of journey.

One can even cancel their tickets if necessary with a minimum amount of cancellation charge.
