Situated between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj is the main railway station of Delhi, the New Delhi Railway Station. This station is considered the third busiest with 500,000 passengers daily. Out of the 300 trains that traverse through this station, the major trains are the Lucknow Swarn Shatabdi Express, the Lucknow Mail, the Chandigarh New Delhi Shatabdi Express, and the Kanpur Shatabdi Express. The Kerala Express to Thiruvananthapuram that starts from this station is considered the longest running train in India with daily services. The station has the largest route interlocking system in the world similar to the Kanpur Central Railway Station, i.e., 48.

Opened in the year 1926 with a single platform, this station now has 16 platforms. About 18 tracks run through the station. It was formerly known as the East Indian Railway Company. For the redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station, prior to the Commonwealth Games, Terry Farrell and Partners were commissioned in the year 2007. In the year 2009, a new building on the Ajmeri Gate side was opened by the Northern Railway. The new building spread over three floors has a total floor area of 900 m2. The Delhi Metro makes it convenient for passengers to reach the station via yellow line. It is also connected to the Indira Gandhi International Airport through the same metro line.

The major attraction of this station is the Travel Executive Lounge at platform no. 16. Also, the platforms have vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshment rooms and light refreshment stalls managed by IRCTC. There are facilities for passengers waiting for connecting trains that include waiting rooms, chargeable cloak rooms, AC or non-AC retiring rooms and dormitories. Break Journey Rules of IRCTC – Know Them Before Booking Your Train Tickets

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) is a Public Sector Enterprise. It functions under the Ministry of Railways.  The objective of IRCTC is to modify, amend, upgrade and manage the hospitality and catering services at railway stations, in every train and other locations. The company promotes domestic and international tourism by launching special tour packages, providing budget hotels to tourists, and giving them proper information about Indian railways.

You can use IRCTC portal to book train tickets online, know train running status, check your PNR status, and get the Indian railway timetable information and much more.

Apart from all these services, IRCTC provides you with facilities of traveling for a long distance by breaking your journey. Yes, IRCTC offers ‘break journey’ facility to train passenger.

Read this article and know ‘break journey rules’ of the IRCTC –

If you have a single ticket for a journey, and this journey will cover a distance of more than 500 kilometers, you will be allowed to break your journey once for two days at any station en-route. You can avail this facility only after traveling 500 kilometers from the starting station.

If you are going to travel for a distance of more than 1000 kilometers, you can enjoy parting your trip twice. Only you have to remember the departure and arrival date. Exclude these days while calculating the number of eligible days for first break of your journey. Ticket should be endorsed by the station manager/ticket collector at the station where this journey is intended.

IRCTC does not allow this facility to passengers who have booked their tickets in Shatbadi/ Rajdhani/Jan shatbadi express trains. However, for booking tickets in other express trains, you will need to inform the ticket booking office about your intention of traveling in intervals at the time of booking your ticket as you cannot avail this facility after getting the reservation.

Important Notice –
Blow is key information about the rules of break journey. Know them if you want to enjoy this facility:

• You cannot enjoy the break journey facility if you want to book a single ticket for 800 kilometers and want to have a pause in your trip for two days at 423 kilometers.

• You can be permitted once for maximum 2 days stoppage at 501 kilometers only if you have a ticket for 600 kilometers.

• If you have a single journey ticket for 1050 kilometers and you want to break your travel at 400 kilometers and 801 kilometers, you will be given only one break at 801 kilometers for maximum of 2 days.

• If you have a single ticket for the journey of 2000 kilometers and you want a break  at 800 kilometers, 905 kilometers and 1505 kilometers, then you can have only two break journey depending on your per choice at the rate of two days maximum at each point of break journey.

Overview of Visakhapatnam Railway Station – VSKP

Visakhapatnam is one of the major railway stations in the south central zone of Indian railways, situated in Andhra Pradesh .The Visakhapatnam railway station lies on main Chennai Howrah route.

Even though the station at present does not look like a terminal, it is considered to be a terminus; generally the stoppage of a pass through train is more than 10 mins, since most of the trains have to change the direction of journey passage which involves a change of engine position. There are more than 23 trains which originate or terminate on this station. Some of the major trains that pass through this station is the Godavri Express , Ratnachal Express, Visakhapatnam – Secunderabad Garib Rath.To reduce the congestion at Visakhapatnam another station is being developed near Vizag Steel plant named Duvvada. Mostly the trains are halted at Duvvada or Vizianagram for the platforms to be cleared. Approximately around 5000 passengers travel on Secunderabad – Visakhapatnam route.

Visakhapatnam railway station is one of the most well kept hygienic railway station, surrounded by natural scenic hills. A trivia is that this station was earlier known as Walt air railway station, since Visakhapatnam used to fall under the erstwhile Walt air Railway Zone or the east coast railway zone. This railways zone is currently headquartered at Visakhapatnam.

One would experience noise of aircraft take offs on as the Vizag defence academy is situated near the Vizag port.

Overview of Secunderabad Railway Station – SC

Secunderabad is a part of Hyderabad which is the capital of the newly formed state of Telengana, it was built by the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1874. Secunderabad was the main station falling under the Nizam’s division of Railways in the pre independence era. In 1951 the Indian Railways took over the charge of Secunderabad railway station after its nationalization. One can avail the MMTS train facilities from Secunderabad jn which is interconnected to various local stations like Nampally also known as Hyderabad Deccan, Kacheguda, Lingampally etc. Around 200 trains arrive and depart from Secunderabad Junction. The Secunderabad station has 10 platforms. Some of the major trains which pass through this station is the Konark Express, Ajmer- Hyderabad, Godavari Express, Patna – Secunderabad superfast express. It is one of the few railway stations in India to attain the ISO certification.

Currently Secunderabad junction is planned to cater to different kinds of trains such as the following;

  • MMTS and Sub urban trains
  • Mail Express trains

The local bus stand is also situated near the Secunderabad junction , for those who want to take bus for local journey’s one should exit from Platform no 1. For tourist who want to visit various famous places in Hyderabad should include places as Ramoji City, Hussain Sagar Lake, Charminar etc. in their itinerary.

Facilities at Secunderabad Railway Station –

The railway station is equipped with waiting rooms for upper class and sleeper class passengers , the upper class waiting room is equipped with air conditioner and television for entertainment, with facilities for laptop and mobile charging. The station also has a cloak room . The luggage can be kept at the cloak room for a fees and by providing relevant documents. To retrieve the luggage one must report at the cloak room  at least 30 mins prior to train journey to avoid last minute rush , as the cloak generally is crowded with passengers for retrieving or depositing their luggage.All these facilities are situated at Platform no 1.

Hyderabad is famous for it’s biriyani , one must not miss ordering Chicken Biriyani or Mutton Biriyani. The biriyani is usually best had with gravy of chicken curry or mutton curry.

Both these restaurant is within the vicinity of 4 -5 kms from the Railway station.

Howrah railway station is the oldest railway station in city of Kolkata. It holds 23 platforms and it has the most astounding train-taking care of limit of any track station in India; and is one of the busiest line stations regarding traveler capacity for every day.Earlier the city came under the Bengali Kingdom from “Bhurshut” earlier in 1578 it was known as Buttor.
