It has a total area of 16 km. Known as Gharapuri in ancient times; its present name was given by the Portuguese explorers of the 17th century when they saw a basalt sculpture of an elephant near the entrance. The explorers initially decided to take it home but eventually dropped the sculpture in the sea as their chains weren\u2019t quite strong. Few years later, the sculpture was shifted to the Victoria and Albert Museum by the British. The island centuries ago were the capital of a local kingdom.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belapur Fort<\/strong><br \/>\nBelapur\u00a0Fort is a famous fort near the district of Belapur in Navi\u00a0Mumbai. It was jointly constructed by the Siddhis of Janjira. Later, it was conquered by the Portuguese, followed by the Marathas. It was then captured by the British in the early 19th century. After the British gained utmost power in the region, the importance and popularity of the fort declined, and gradually it fell into disuse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vashi Bridge<\/strong><br \/>\nThe\u00a0VashiBridge is also known by the name of\u00a0Thane\u00a0Creek Bridge and is built across the\u00a0Thane Creek\u00a0which connects the city of\u00a0Mumbai\u00a0to\u00a0Navi Mumbai. It connects the Mankhurd suburb in Mumbai to Vashi in Navi Mumbai, which is called the satellite city of Mumbai. A drive on the bridge gives an amazing view of Mumbai and its high rise buildings. At night, the entire bridge is lighted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DY Patil Stadium<\/strong><br \/>\nD.Y. Patil stadium is essentially a cricket stadium located in D.Y. Patil campus. The stadium matches the level of any other international cricket stadium. It was inaugurated in 2008 and is the home turf for IPL team Mumbai Indians. The stadium has many other facilities too, including 8 tennis courts, a huge swimming pool and 4 badminton courts. A special feature of the stadium is its cantilever roof, which provides the viewers with a clear view of the match from any place on the stands without any obstructions. For any cricket fanatic, one live match here will be a memorable experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dirubhai Ambani Knowledge City<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dirubhai Ambani Knowledge City is an IT park situated on the\u00a0Thane-BelapurRoad, Koparkhairane in Navi\u00a0Mumbai.\u00a0Spread over a whopping 57 hectares, the city was completed in 2002.
