Indian railways which <span id=\"GRmark_451b6388924a8e28195f02847a93cc7fefa18ba6_was first brought:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">was first brought<\/span> in by the British colonizers in the year 1885 has ever been since <span id=\"GRmark_451b6388924a8e28195f02847a93cc7fefa18ba6_expanding:1\" class=\"GRcorrect\">expanding<\/span>. \u00a0Today Indian railway has the fourth largest Network in the world.<\/div>\n<div align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Train travel in India has improved vastly since independence in 1947,\u00a0 in terms of more trains and routes, frequency, amenities and luxuries but much of the rural and semi-urban population <span id=\"GRmark_7977fd70bb1ece67476126bc7533642c0cc3514c_continue:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">continue<\/span> to travel like cattle. It has been a century now but the experience felt by Mahatma Gandhi while travelling in an Indian train is just the same\u00a0 for the common man.<\/p>\n<p>As Gandhi said\u201d \u201cOn the 12th instant I booked at Bombay for Madras by the mail train. It was labelled to carry 22 passengers. These could only have seating accommodation. There were no\u00a0<span id=\"GRmark_38459d2f8e7bc7bea3b9c315c4af2467932ba6a5_bunks:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">bunks<\/span> in this carriage where on passengers could lie with any degree of safety or comfort\u201d. Gandhi writes. \u201cThere were during this night as many as 35 passengers in the carriage during the greater part of it. Some lay on the floor in the midst of dirt and some had to keep standing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first things the Indian statesman Gandhi did on arriving from South Africa in 1915 \u2014 to lead the freedom struggle against the British \u2014 was to travel by Indian Railways, and travel as the masses did, third class. He knew the only way to gauge the mood of the people was to travel by train wherever he went and if he had to champion their cause he had to become one of them. Now there is no third class in any train of the Indian railway network.
