It is a celebration of Goddess Durga\u2019s victory over the evil demon Mahishasura. It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shasthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami.\u00a0 More than just a festival\u00a0Durga Puja\u00a0is a celebration of life, culture, popular customs and traditions. It is a time of reunion and rejuvenation to love, to share and to care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Story behind Durga Pooja:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This festival involves the worship of Shakti i.e Goddess Durga. The legend Shakti lays back to the story of Mahisasur, a powerful demon also known as the Buffalo Demon, Through years of intense praying and worship, he got <span id=\"GRmark_54981ccf6ec26aa0300f5e2bcfc500e2ec54ff80_boon:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">boon<\/span> from Lord Brahma that no power could harm him making him invincible. But once the divine powers were bestowed upon him, he started ravaging the whole world and killing people and eventually wanted to uproot the Gods too. The Gods, in dismay, combined their powers to create a beautiful maiden, and each placed his or her most potent weapon in one of her ten hands riding a lion. In 2012, Durga Puja runs from October 20-24<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0The dates of the festival are determined by Hindu calendar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Durga Pooja celebration places:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Durga Pooja\u00a0is celebrated all over India with different rituals and festivities especially in the eastern region covering the states of\u00a0West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Tripura. In\u00a0West Bengal\u00a0and Tripura, where <span id=\"GRmark_00eeadf720516b0f494441d43dba8b51f28c972b_majority:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">majority<\/span> of\u00a0Bengali\u00a0Hindus live it is the biggest festival of the year. Apart from eastern India,\u00a0Durga Puja\u00a0is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh<span id=\"GRmark_fcd2cd8f631bd604dee722b4c0954692b86755f1_,:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">,<\/span>Maharashtra,\u00a0Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir<span id=\"GRmark_fcd2cd8f631bd604dee722b4c0954692b86755f1_,:1\" class=\"GRcorrect\">,<\/span>Karnataka\u00a0and Kerala.<br \/>\n<strong>How is Durga Puja Celebrated<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the northern part of the country, the first nine days of this festival, called\u00a0Navaratri, is commonly observed as a time for rigorous fast, followed by celebrations on the tenth day. In western India, throughout the nine days, both men and women participate in a special kind of dance around an object of worship. In the south, Dusshera or the tenth day is celebrated with a lot of fanfare. In the east, people go crazy over Durga Puja, from the seventh till the tenth day of this annual festival. Statutes of Goddess Durga are\u00a0 installed by the people in their home and beautifully decorated podiums. The Durga Pooja performed by Rama is known as \u2018Akalbodhon\u2019. \u00a0<span id=\"GRmark_e5ae48dd987c3cf4b2c0acd48abbac39b2fb7ec2_Rama:0\" class=\"GRcorrect\">Rama<\/span> performed this to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana. Dussehra is the day when Lord Rama is able to kill Ravana.
