It is once again time to celebrate Eid around the world. It marks the end of the auspicious month of Ramzan. During the Ramzan festival, people who follow the spirit of moderation gather to celebrate the spirit of love and giving to the less fortunate.<\/p>\n

According to Islamic tradition, Eid-al-Fitr is the first day of the month of Shawwal, which follows Ramadan, a month of fasting and abstaining from worldly pleasures. Eid in India begins with celebrations the night before, called “Chand Raat” (night of the moon). Excitement is in the air as people do their Eid shopping at the shops. Young girls also apply henna\/mehandi on their hands and wear colorful bangles.\u00a0This in India is also referred to as the \u201cFestival of Sweets\u201d and sweet foods take center stage on this auspicious day. Lachha Seviyan, a delicious milk-roasted seviyan (vermicelli) over dry fruits, is key to this occasion.<\/p>\n

Muslims all over the world simply call it Eid and it is a time when people gather in mosques and community centers and homes to worship and thank God (Allah) and then celebrate with a great feast. Although traditions vary from country to country, festive foods are still at the heart of the celebrations.<\/p>\n

Muslims around the world break their fast on this festival with traditional foods and sweet dishes. Dates are an important part of the diet that Muslims eat to break the month-long fast. Klaicha is an Iraqi date-filled pastry made with rose water. The food and sweets prepared for the celebration are not only enjoyed by family and friends at gatherings, but are also given to others in the community. In many places, candy packets are given to children visiting neighboring families.<\/p>\n
