A brief to 12471/72 Swaraj express
Supposed to run four times in a week that is Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The train 12471 departs from Bandra terminus at 7 in the morning and arrives Katra station next day at 14:45 hours. On the other side, train 12472 runs on every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in a week. It departs from Katra station at 11:15 in the morning and arrives at Bandra terminus next day at 18:05 hours.
As far as traction is concerned, earlier WCAM 2/2P or WCAM 1 locos hauled the express between Mumbai Central and Vadodara station, after which WAP 4 took over. Following the electrification of the Jammu and Jalandhar segment, a Vadodara-based WAP 5 or WAP 4E shed now hauls the train between Bandra Terminus and Katra. The express has a pantry car attached so passengers need not to think about the food delivery services and others.
12472/Swaraj Express functions four days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from Jammu Tawi to Bandra Terminus. As 12471, it runs on Monday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday in the reverse direction. Throughout its journey, this train covers a distance of 1955 kilometers with 2 stops along the way and takes almost 31 hours to complete the trip. Due the average speed of the train above 55 km/hour, the fare includes superfast surcharge applicable on fast trains.
Coach Information –
Like many other trains operated by Indian Railways, this one does not have an AC 1st class coach. The coach composition starts from AC 2 tier and includes AC 3 tier, sleeper class, general unreserved and a pantry car to provide meals and refreshments along the journey. Swaraj Express runs four days a week between Bandra terminus and Jammu Tawi in Northern India carrying thousands of passengers back and forth every day. It leaves from Bandra at 7 AM and arrives in Jammu at 14.45 the next day on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. From Jammu Tawi, it leaves on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11.15 AM and arrives in Mumbai at Bandra terminus at 18.05 the next day. Running at a maximum speed of 63.32 km/hour, this train has been categorized as super fast and travels via Vadodara Junction-Ratlam Junction-Kota Junction-New Delhi-Ambala Cantonment Station, and then, Jammu Tawi.
Traction Information –
Back in the day, the train was pulled between Mumbai Central and Vadodara Junction using WCAM 1 and WCAM 2 2/2P locomotives. After this route, WAP 4 loco would take over until Ambala Cantonment Junction. WDM 3 twins hauled the train there after from Ludhiana until Jammu Tawi.
However, after Western Railways switched from DC to AC electric conversion in 2012, WAP 4 hauled the train from Vadodara to Ambala Cantonment, followed by WDM 3 twins from Ludhiana to Jammu Tawi. After the Jalandhar–Jammu section was electrified, WAP 4E began hauling the train all the way from Bandra Terminus to Jammu Tawi.
