India’s Republic Day: What You Need To Know

India celebrates its Republic Day every year on 26th January. This year, the nation celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Republic on Friday 26 Jan, 2024, which in many ways is the same, but also different. President Draupadi Murmu is the first Republic Day to unfurl the tricolor at the newly opened Kartavaya Path to kick off the celebrations.

Every year, millions of Indians watch the rich traditions, cultural heritage, pageants and progress, and achievements of the country and air shows of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force on television.

The History of Republic Day

The Constitution of India was formally adopted on January 26, 1950, and that event is celebrated during Republic Day. India was freed from the British Raj in 1947, but the Constitution of India did not come into force until January 26, 1950, when India became an independent country and a republic.

The Constituent Assembly met for the first time on December 9, 1946, and for the last time on November 26, 1949, which is also celebrated on Constitution Day.

Republic Day honors the spirit and independence of India. When the Indian National Congress declared the end of colonial rule on 26 January 1930 and declared Purna Swaraj at a convention on the banks of the Ravi in Lahore, the constitution was formally adopted on 26 January 1950. Republic Day also honors the right of Indian citizens to elect a democratically run government. To celebrate the creation of the Constitution of India, the country celebrates it as a national holiday.

The anniversary of the Republic is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country. The President raises the national flag, followed by a spectacular military and cultural show by the councils of various states and ministries.

The President of India also awards the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra to gallant soldiers, and Padma awards are given to the nation and its civilians for services.
