Things to Know Related to Indian Railways Break Journey Norms. Indian Railways, a vast network recognized both nationally and internationally, operates over 1 lakh kilometres of track. It allows passengers to break their journey once for approximately two days if they hold tickets for travel exceeding 500 kilometres. This kind of break journey facility is only and only available for those passengers who are travelling for about 500 kms and for the ones who are travelling for more than 1000 kms range, they can actually break their journey two times, as per the Indian Railway norms and rules.
According to Indian Railway rules, passengers must exclude the days of arrival and departure when calculating the exact number of valid days for the first break during their journey. The key aspects from which you should be aware of, in case of Indian Railways break journey are as follows.
| 1 | A passenger holding a reservation, single way of 800 kms and wishes to break at 423 kms. | Not Allowed. |
| 2 | A passenger holding a reservation, single way of 600 kms and wishes to break at 501 kms. | Allowed once and for 2 days maximum. |
| 3 | A passenger holding a reservation, single way of 1050 kms and wishes to break once at 400 kms and then at 801 kms. | Indian Railways allows only one break at 801 km, and that too for a maximum of two days. |
| 4 | A passenger holding a reservation, single way of 2000 kms, and wishes to break at 800 kms, 905 kms and at 1505 kms. | Indian Railways allows two breaks during the journey, with each break lasting a maximum of two days, as per the passenger’s choice. |
Whenever a traveller gets off at a station en route to board a connecting train, Indian Railways does not consider it a break journey if the halt is less than 24 hours. For example, if a passenger is travelling from Pune to Jammu Tawi and reaches Bombay a day early by another train to board the Bombay Jammu Tawi Express the next morning, it will not count as a break journey as per Indian Railway rules.
