Char Dham Yatra – A Divine Journey to the Four Sacred Abodes

Char Dham Yatra – A Divine Journey to the Four Sacred Abodes

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimage circuits in India, attracting millions of devotees and spiritual seekers every year. Nestled in the majestic Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the Char Dham includes four sacred shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each dham holds immense religious significance and offers breathtaking views of nature in its purest form. Pilgrims believe that visiting these four dhams washes away all sins and paves the path to moksha (liberation).

Let us take you through each of these divine destinations and how you can reach them comfortably.

Yamunotri – The Source of the Yamuna River

Significance:
Yamunotri is the first dham of the Char Dham circuit and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. It is the source of the Yamuna River, the second holiest river in India. Maharani Guleria of Jaipur built the temple in the 19th century, and it stands at an altitude of 3,293 meters.

How to Reach Yamunotri:

  • Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun (around 172 km)
  • Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (around 196 km)
  • By Road: From Dehradun, Rishikesh, or Haridwar, travelers can reach Barkot via road. From Barkot, drive to Janki Chatti (the last motorable point), and then a 6 km trek will take you to the Yamunotri temple.
  • Trekking Option: Ponies and palanquins are available for hire for those who wish to avoid walking.

Best Time to Visit: May to October

Gangotri – The Origin of the Ganges

Significance:
Gangotri is the second dham and marks the origin of the River Ganga, worshipped as Goddess Ganga. The temple, located at an altitude of 3,100 meters, was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century.

How to Reach Gangotri:

  • Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun (around 240 km)
  • Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (250 km)
  • By Road: Gangotri is well connected by road to major towns like Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, and Haridwar. From Uttarkashi, Gangotri is around 100 km and takes about 4-5 hours by vehicle.
  • Note: Pilgrims visiting Gaumukh (actual origin of the Ganges) must trek another 19 km from Gangotri, which requires a permit.

Best Time to Visit: May to October

Kedarnath – The Abode of Lord Shiva

Significance:
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and perhaps the most spiritually significant dham in the circuit. The Pandavas built the Kedarnath temple, situated at a staggering altitude of 3,583 meters, and Adi Shankaracharya restored it in the 8th century.

How to Reach Kedarnath:

  • Nearest Railway Station: Rishikesh (about 210 km to Gaurikund)
  • Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (around 240 km)
  • By Road: The journey begins from Haridwar or Rishikesh to Sonprayag, then to Gaurikund (the last motorable point). From Gaurikund, it’s a 16-18 km trek to Kedarnath. Helicopter services are also available from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi.
  • Trekking Option: Ponies and palkis are available for elderly or unfit pilgrims.

Best Time to Visit: May to October (Avoid monsoons due to landslides)

Badrinath – The Home of Lord Vishnu

Significance:
Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badri form. It is the final stop of the Char Dham Yatra and is located at an altitude of 3,133 meters between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. The temple was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
