Train Journey Stories: How Conversations on Indian Railways Create Lifelong Memories
Train journeys are about much more than reaching a destination. They introduce us to new people, unexpected conversations, and memorable experiences that often stay with us long after the journey ends. Among the many train journey stories shared by travellers, some begin with a simple greeting and end with friendships, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
One such experience unfolded during an overnight journey on the Sealdah Rajdhani Express while travelling towards Uttarakhand for the famous Valley of Flowers trek. Like many passengers, the journey began quietly. After settling into the seat and finishing some pending work, I decided to stretch my legs by taking a walk through the coach.
As I passed by, an elderly lady smiled and invited me to sit for a while. She reminded me of my grandmother with her warmth and cheerful personality. We soon began talking in Bengali, and what started as a casual conversation quickly turned into something much more meaningful.
She was travelling to Delhi with her brother and had an incredible ability to connect with people. Curious about my backpack, she asked where I was travelling, what I did for a living, and why I enjoyed travelling with just one bag. Her questions were thoughtful rather than intrusive, making the conversation feel comfortable and genuine.
Before long, other passengers joined us. People from different cities, professions, and age groups became part of the discussion. That’s one of the most beautiful aspects of Indian train travel—strangers often become companions, even if only for a few hours.

When Food Becomes the Common Language
As often happens during long train journeys, the conversation eventually shifted towards food. One mention of biryani was enough to spark an animated discussion across the entire compartment.
Coincidentally, one of the passengers owned a popular restaurant in Delhi. Everyone became curious about his recipes, favourite ingredients, cooking methods, and regional variations of biryani. Questions came from every direction, and he answered each one with patience and a smile.
Soon, everyone had a story to share.
Some passionately defended the rich flavours of Hyderabadi Biryani, while others insisted that Kolkata Biryani, with its signature potato and subtle spices, was unmatched. A few travellers praised the aromatic Lucknowi Biryani, while others spoke fondly of homemade family recipes passed down through generations.
What made the conversation special wasn’t deciding which biryani was the best—it was discovering how food connected complete strangers. Within a short time, an entire railway coach was laughing, sharing recommendations, and exchanging travel experiences as if they had known each other for years.

More Than Just a Train Journey
The next morning, as the train crossed the plains of northern India, our conversation continued almost exactly where it had ended the previous night. We discussed favourite restaurants, memorable vacations, family traditions, and future travel plans.
Before reaching Delhi, the restaurant owner warmly invited everyone to visit his restaurant whenever they were in the city. Although my onward journey took me towards Uttarakhand, making it impossible to accept the invitation, the gesture reflected the unique friendships that often begin during railway travel.
Moments like these remind us that some of the best memories are never planned. They happen naturally when people share stories, meals, and smiles along the way.
Final Thoughts
Among the countless train journey stories across India, many are built around simple conversations that begin with a hello and end with cherished memories. Indian Railways connects not only cities but also people from diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds.
Whether you’re discussing travel destinations, local traditions, or favourite dishes, every journey has the potential to create a story worth remembering.
